The York Walking Tour

Experience a conducted tour in a city which enjoys its Medieval and Roman heritage

Discover views like this on a groupdaysout coach tour

Meet our qualified guide at the entrance to the Castle Museum, York's representation of times past. After a stop for refreshment you will be taken on a walking tour. First you will see Clifford's Tower and then, through Coppergate to the Merchant Adventurers' Hall in Fossgate. After this you will see The Shambles, reputed to be Europe's most visited street. From The Shambles you will walk to Goodramgate where you will see Lady Row, York's oldest group of cottages. You will then see York Minster, the largest Medieval Gothic cathedral north of the Alps and a treasure house of 800 years of stained glass.

Your guide will point out to you Barley Hall currently being restored. If you have time after your guided walk you can step back into the fifteenth century and explore Barley Hall with its informative and entertaining costumed guides. You will see how it is being restored to its former splendour - and there will be the opportunity to take a lesson in medieval etiquette. You can take a walk along the medieval city wall and see the Minster's Treasurer's House close to the 15th Century St William's College.

In addition to its medieval and Roman heritage York is of course home to decades of railway history; the national Railway Museum is here. It is also the home of Rowntrees and until recently Terry's two of the world's greatest chocolate makers and to Betty's tearooms famous since 1886. After the tour your guide will leave you to take refreshments at Betty's or any of the other high-class establishments in this ancient city.
