![]() The Ancient York Tour ![]() Meet our qualified guide on the outskirts of the ancient city of York and after a stop for refreshment you will be taken on a panoramic tour of the 'greater' area of the city. You will see the Knavesmire, York's racecourse. One of Britain's premier racecourses, York is the home to the Ebor Handicap each August. You will have the opportunity to see the Clifford's Tower, notorious as the site of York's most shameful hour. The city's Jewish population took refuge there after being attacked by a local mob in 1190. They were offered baptism or execution, but chose a third option instead. They took their own lives in a mass suicide pact. A modern memorial records the event. On your return to the city walls you will have the opportunity to either make your own way around the city, exploring the ancient passageways and buildings or to be conducted on a short tour by your guide to see York Minster, the largest Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe, the 18th century Theatre Royal, Lady Row, York's 14th Century cottages and the Merchant Adventurers' Hall. There are many places to take lunch in York including the world famous 'Betty's' tearooms. When you are ready to move on we shall join the YorkBoat cruiser for a journey on the River Ouse through York City and into the countryside with the captain's commentary throughout the journey. At the end of your cruise on the Ouse your guide will bid you farewell.
