The Roman Chester Tour

Enjoy the sights of a fabulous city including the country's oldest racecourse, and the world famous Roman and Mediaeval Wall

The famous Rows of the ancient city of Chester

On the outskirts of Chester you will be met by your guide who will direct you to refreshments before taking you on a conducted tour of the ancient city. Depending on your preference this can be a walking tour of the Roman and Mediaeval Wall enclosing the City, parts of which date back to the first century AD. Alternatively a guided tour by coach will show you the sights of the city, including the famous Chester Racecourse, the country's oldest. The first official records of horse racing at Chester date back to the early sixteenth century.

It was here that the Roman legions arrived to build their fortress Deva. In the days of Roman occupation, the River Dee washed up to the walls where today, thousands stand to cheer on the winner of the Chester Cup. We shall then return to the centre of Chester where you will be able to leave the coach and make your own arrangements for lunch.

After lunch you will travel on to the Wirral to see Ness Gardens. Thanks to the mild western climate and sheltering trees the landscaped gardens of Ness are full of colour all the year round. The garden was started by Arthur Bulley in 1898 and given to the University of Liverpool in 1948. Though a cotton broker, Bulley was a keen socialist and always gave the public access to his garden, as they still have. Ness Gardens have a good range of plants in the traditional groups: woodland garden, herbaceous borders, heather garden and rock garden. From the Ness Gardens you will return to Chester to say farewell
