![]() The Cheshire Experience ![]() Your guide will meet you in Northwich, famous for its massive salt deposits. Despite being extracted for all this time the estimate is that there are still millions of tons left. Your first port of call will be Northwich's 100 year old Salt Museum, now housed in the former Northwich Union Workhouse. The museum explains in detail how the salt on your table was recovered and refined. Refreshments are available here. It is then a short journey through the Cheshire countryside to your next stop, the Anderton Boat Lift. Built in 1875 to raise 100-ton barges 50ft from the River Weaver to the Trent and Mersey Canal the excellent visitor centre will enable you to see in action a masterpiece of Victorian engineering. There is time to linger here and you will take a cruise on the river to Northwich Town Swing Bridge along the Weaver Navigation, as well as having the opportunity to take lunch. From Anderton we shall travel through the beautiful Delamere Forest, once the hunting grounds of the Earls of Chester and now a major source of home-grown timber. Delamere Forest park is also a haven for wildlife including the beautiful Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly, Greater Spotted Woodpecker, White Faced Darter Dragonfly, Green Woodpecker, Siskin and Southern Hawker Dragonfly. Your guide will explain points of interest on the journey.
