![]() The Stratford and Upton House Tour ![]() Meet your qualified guide on the outskirts of Stratford and take a break for refreshment before embarking on a guided panoramic tour of the significant features of this world-famous town. You will see Shakespeare's birthplace, a superbly restored terrace in the town and home to a fascinating museum of ShakespeareÕs life and works. Next you will see the site of New Place, Shakespeare's home for the last 19 years of his life and then Hall's Croft the home of his daughter Susanna. You will hear about the three major fires that occurred during his lifetime and of the serious food shortages in the town that reduced much of the population to poverty. After lunch in one of the town's many cafes and teashops your coach will take you on a leisurely tour of the Warwickshire countryside, passing the site of the first battle of the English Civil War at Edgehill in 1642 to Upton House a late 17th-century house with significant art collections and superb terraced gardens. Built in 1695 of mellow local stone, this beautiful house is renowned for the quality of the collections it houses. Assembled this century by the 2nd Viscount Bearsted, the son of petroleum magnate Marcus Samuel (founder of Shell), they include paintings by English and Continental Old Masters, tapestries, porcelain, Chelsea figures and fine 18th-century furniture. You will be taken on a conducted tour of this mansion and its grounds. At the end of the tour you can take refreshment before rejoining your coach and taking a leisurely cruise through the Warwickshire countryside to Stratford where your guide will leave you.
