![]() Shakespeare Country ![]() Meet your qualified guide on the outskirts of Stratford and take a break for refreshment. After coffee there will be a guided tour of the significant features of this world-famous town. You will see Shakespeare's birthplace, a half-timbered building in Henley Street. Then on to the site of New Place, Shakespeare's home for the last 19 years of his life and Hall's Croft the home of his daughter Susanna. This tour of Stratford will be described in full by your knowledgeable guide who will answer your questions about the Bard and his work. After lunch in one of the many cafes and tea rooms in the town you will travel to Shottery, passing Anne Hathaway's cottage and then to Wilmcote to see the home of Mary Arden, Shakespeare's mother. The house, which was only recently formally identified, is furnished as a late Victorian farm cottage to which it was converted over 100 years ago. Palmer's Farm, adjacent, had for centuries been believed to be Mary Arden's home. You will then travel to Charlecote Park, the home of the Lucy family for over 700 years. The mellow brickwork and great chimneys of Charlecote seem to sum up the very essence of Tudor England. There are strong associations with both Queen Elizabeth and Shakespeare, who knew the house well. There will be time to view the grounds, including the coach house, the laundry and brewhouse and the superbly maintained gardens. The Orangery will be open for you to take refreshments after your stroll and before departure. On leaving Charlecote you will return to Stratford upon Avon where your guide will leave you.
