The Cromwell Country Tour

Enjoy a great day exploring the hidden attractions of Huntingdonshire

Discover views like this on a groupdaysout coach tour

Meet your guide in Huntingdon, a town with many attractive Georgian properties. Oliver Cromwell was born here in 1599. Your morning refreshment break will provide the opportunity to visit the Cromwell Museum housed in a small Norman building by the market place. This was originally the grammar school attended by both Oliver Cromwell and, thirty years later, Samuel Pepys.

After a short coach tour of the town with a full commentary by your guide you will travel through St Neots and the Cambridgeshire countryside to Grafham Water, set in 1,500 acres of parkland. Visitors interested in wildlife will be particularly attracted by the area, as it is designated as a site of special scientific interest. In the large nature reserve there are nature trails, information boards, a special dragonfly pond and a wildlife garden. There will be the opportunity to walk, see the visitor centre and to take lunch.

From here you will take a panoramic tour with points of interest identified by your guide on the way to Hemingford Grey to see a church with an interesting story to tell and what is believed to be the oldest inhabited house in England. St Ives is your next stop with its medieval bridge chapel believed to be one of only four surviving in England. Then onwards to the 17th Century Houghton Water Mill. The five-storey weatherboarded mill is set on an island in the Great Ouse and has intact machinery that is still operational. The riverside meadows offer marvellous walks and the tearoom has a delightful riverside setting. After tea you will head back to Huntingdon where your guide will leave you.
