![]() The Constable Country Tour ![]() The riverbanks and villages on the borders of Suffolk and Essex are famous for the paintings of John Constable. The stretch of the River Stour between Flatford and Nayland is famous worldwide as a result of his landscapes. Constable was born at East Bergholt where you will meet your qualified guide for a day touring ‘Constable Country’. After a break for refreshment you will see St. Mary’s Church with its unique Bell Cage and the font where John was baptised. You travel on to Flatford. Scenes from here have been included in many of Constable’s well-loved paintings. The buildings he painted are still there and the beautiful countryside is a network of watercourses supporting wildfowl, flowers and superb trees. At Flatford you will enjoy a short guided walk to Flatford Mill, the site of one of Constables most famous paintings ‘The Haywain’ and stand as he did when he sketched and then painted his picture ‘Boat Building’. You will see other locations for his paintings as you travel to Dedham where you will see the Grammar school he attended and The Church of St Mary the Virgin, with it’s impressive high tower. After lunch in Dedham you will visit the church, and see an original Constable painting ‘The Ascension’. Leaving Dedham we cross the River Stour, driving through Stratford St Mary to Stoke-by-Nayland where we will see the splendid church, the impressive black and white timbered Tudor Maltings Houses and the Guild House on our way to Nayland where we hope to visit St James’ Church to see ‘Christ Blessing the Bread and Wine of the Last Supper’, a beautiful Constable painting, hanging above the altar. After refreshment you will return to East Bergholt through the beautiful Essex villages of Boxted and Langham to say farewell to your guide.
