The Blooming Britain Tour

Lavenham is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe with streets full of beautiful half-timbered houses

See the beautiful half timbered houses in medieval Lavenham

Meet your qualified guide on Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds. After coffee take a stroll through the beautiful Abbey gardens - Bury St Edmunds features regularly amongst the prize-winners in the 'Britain in Bloom' competition - and see the remains of the Abbey and the great Abbey Church. From Bury St Edmunds you will travel through the lovely Suffolk countryside to Lavenham, a town famous in the Middle Ages for its woollen cloth. Lavenham is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe with streets full of beautiful half-timbered houses.

You will have time to take lunch and the opportunity for an optional guided tour around some of the charming old streets learning strange and fascinating things about life in medieval England. Landscape artist John Constable was at school here but only for a short time. From Lavenham you will drive to Long Melford, again another 'Wool' town with a wide main street and a wonderful mixture of shops and houses. Antique shops flourish and there is an Antique Warehouse with many small outlets all in the same building.

The Bull Hotel was a wool merchant's house that later became a coaching inn. Ian McShane stayed at The Bull when filming the 'Lovejoy' series here and in the local villages. You will have time for refreshment in Long Melford before driving past the Elizabethan Melford Hall and the Church of the Holy Trinity, arguably the finest church in Suffolk. At the end of a full day you will head back to Bury St Edmunds where your guide will leave you and bid you farewell on your journey home.
