The Stamford and Rutland Tour

Sample the delights of Stamford, Rutland Water and Oakham

Discover views like this on a groupdaysout coach tour

After meeting your guide on the outskirts of Stamford there will be time for refreshment. You will then take a walking tour of this fascinating town with its origins going back to the Saxons. Stamford has been an important river crossing on the road from north to south and to this day the A1 trunk road runs close. Stamford is considered to be the finest stone town in England. It boasts the oldest provincial assembly rooms in the country and the second oldest provincial theatre. You will hear about the many personalities that have been residents or distinguished visitors over the centuries.

The Georgian buildings of old Lincolnshire limestone are a delight. They are famously popular with film and television directors and have been used in many productions including the BBC's 'Middlemarch' and the recent feature film version of 'Pride and Prejudice'. Your guide will explain the history of the churches, Browne's Hospital and the 'George of Stamford' one of England's greatest coaching inns, which is estimated to be around 1,000 years old. Lunch can be taken in any of the wide variety of cafes, restaurants and inns.

In the afternoon you will travel alongside the lovely Rutland Water to Oakham and into deepest Rutland. You will pass the Rutland Turf Maze in Wing, travel through Uppingham, with its 16th century public school, on to Rockingham to see the castle built by William the Conqueror. After passing under the magnificent Harringworth Viaduct with its 80 arches your panoramic tour will return you to Stamford for refreshment, and to bid farewell to your guide.
