![]() The Peak Practice Tour ![]() Your qualified guide will meet you on the outskirts of Alfreton and take you into the Peak District National Park covering 555 square miles at the southern end of the Pennines. After a refreshment stop at Willersley Castle, the former Arkwright family home, you will pass Wingfield Manor - a huge, ruined country mansion. In 1569 and in 1584-5 Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here. Then off to Crich - better known to some as 'Cardale' in the TV series 'Peak Practice'. From Crich you will travel to Cromford where there may be the opportunity to visit St Mary's church. The Victorian artist, A.O. Hemming, decorated the interior with striking wall paintings and stained glass. You will see Sir Richard Arkwright's Cromford Mill, built in 1771 and designated a 'World Heritage Site'. At the group's choice, lunch can be taken at Masson Mill, a later Arkwright mill with an attractive restaurant overlooking the River Derwent and opportunities for shopping in its diverse retail outlets. Alternatively, you can take lunch in Wirksworth, a very important town in the industrial activity of the 18th and 19th centuries. There are several pubs and cafes here. The town was recently used as the 'backdrop' for the 'Sweet Medicine' TV series. From Wirksworth you will travel through pleasant countryside to Carsington Water visitor centre. Then it's back to Alfreton through Belper, a town with a long cotton history. If there is time you may also like to call at the world famous Denby Pottery. On reaching Alfreton you will bid your guide goodbye and set off on your journey home.
