![]() The Northants Limestone Tour ![]() Our qualified guide will meet you on the outskirts of Oundle in Northamptonshire. Whilst this part of the world is not the definitive 'Cotswolds' most of the geological and structural features are similar. Limestone cottages, stone slate roofs and great houses with their estates are a real surprise to the first time visitor. After a pause for refreshment your guide will first take you on a walking tour of Oundle. Famous for its public school, the town was known in Anglo-Saxon times as Undela, or Undalum. Oundle is virtually surrounded by the River Nene and is easy to walk around, being almost totally level. You will see the Talbot Hotel, largely rebuilt in 1626, the Tudor style Town Hall built in the early 19th Century and of course Oundle School. At certain times we are able to gain access to the school and to the chapel. The chapel is notable for its windows designed by John Piper, the 20th century's leading stained glass artist. After taking lunch in one of the town's many cafes or inns you will be conducted on a coach tour of the Willowbrook villages that are steeped in history. You will visit Fotheringhay where the castle, belonging to the Dukes of York was the scene of many historic events. Some of the stone from the now-demolished castle was used in the construction of buildings in Oundle. From here you will see other attractive villages in the Rockingham Forest as well as the 16th Century Deene Park and Kirby Hall, one of the great Elizabethan houses, before returning to Oundle for refreshment and to say goodbye to your guide.
