![]() In and Around Lincoln ![]() The City of Lincoln has dominated and influenced the surrounding countryside for more than 2000 years. From warring tribes, through the occupation by the Romans in the 1st century AD then control by the Saxons and the Danes to that point 1000 years ago when the Normans created the castle and the cathedral. The cathedral was recently filmed for the Da Vinci Code dressed as West Minster Abbey. All of this has bequeathed us a city with masses of history that is as unspoilt as any in England. Lincoln's architecture includes a Norman bridge over the city centre waterway still in use today and on which stands Tudor houses. In addition a Roman arch still controls the passage of traffic into the city. After meeting your qualified guide and a short break for refreshments, you will be taken on a comprehensive walking tour of the fascinating streets and alleys. Please remember that Lincoln is situated on a famous hill so to get from the level of the River Witham to the castle or the cathedral requires a considerable climb. After taking lunch overlooking the activity of Brayfords Wharf or at a tea room in one of the secluded streets you will travel by coach for a guided tour of the sights of Lincoln just outside the centre. At the end of your coach tour there will be time to do and see what appeals to you most. This could include a conducted tour of the Roman Excavations, a visit to the castle or the cathedral or a short cruise on the River Witham and the Fossdyke Roman canal. Before departure there will be time for refreshment.
