![]() Historic Nottingham ![]() Meet your guide in Nottingham, home of Robin Hood, and break for refreshment before starting your walking tour of this 13th century city. Your tour begins in the Market Square, where King Henry II issued the town charter, establishing two markets to be held. In the square, the Council House has a fresco of Robin and his men. St Matthew’s Fair, now known as Goose Fair was held in the Market Place every year and the famous archery competition was held here where Robin is reputed to have won a gold and silver arrow. In the Lace Market area we visit St Mary’s Church built on the site of the church where Robin was captured and taken into custody at Nottingham Castle. The original church was destroyed by Henry II’s troops in the mid 12th century. We then visit The Brewhouse Yard Museum of Nottingham Life, depicting the social history of Nottingham over the last 300 years. Leaving the museum we visit Nottingham Castle. The original castle was a wooden structure built in early Norman times. Nowadays the only ancient part of the castle is the 14th century gatehouse. The castle now houses the Nottingham City museum and Art gallery, the museum of clothing and the Lace Museum. Outside the castle walls is Castle Green, home to James Woodford’s statue of Robin Hood and his band of men. Afternoon refreshments can be taken in Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, dating back to 1189 and claiming to be England’s oldest inn. Here you will bid your guide farewell.
