![]() Gorgeous Georgian Stamford ![]() After meeting your guide on the outskirts of Stamford there will be time for refreshment. You will then take a walking tour of this fascinating town with it's origins going back to the Saxons. Stamford has always been an important river crossing point on the road from north to south and is considered to be the finest stone town in England. It boasts the oldest provincial assembly rooms in the country and the second oldest provincial theatre. You will hear about the many personalities that have been residents or distinguished visitors over the centuries. The Georgian buildings of old Lincolnshire limestone are a delight. They are famously popular with film and television directors and have been used in many productions including the BBC's 'Middlemarch' and the recent feature film version of 'Pride and Prejudice'. Your guide will explain the history of the churches and Browne's hospital and the 'George of Stamford', one of England's greatest coching inns, which is estimated to be around 1,000 years old. Lunch can be taken in any one of the wide variety of cafes, restaurants and inns or you can browse the very select shops. You will then travel to Burghley House, one of the largest and grandest houses of the first Elizabethan Age, home to the famous Burghley Horse Trials and the location for Rosings in 'Pride and Prejudice'. You will view the house - including the 'Heaven' room, the park and sculpture garden. At the end of your visit you will have the chance to see some of the local villages on your way back to Stamford.
