![]() D H Lawrence Delights ![]() Meet your guide on the outskirts of the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire border town of Eastwood and break for refreshments before touring D H Lawrence’s beloved countryside. You will see how his hometown shaped and created his often-controversial works. On your walking tour around Eastwood, you will see the novelist’s birthplace which today is a museum recreating the Victorian family home, complete with a display of watercolours painted by Lawrence. Walking around the town, you can see other Lawrence family houses, view his school and the public houses frequented by his contemporaries along with the beautiful countryside and the actual locations that inspired his many works. Returning to your coach you will travel to Vine Cottage, near the site of Brinsley Colliery, the home of Lawrence’s Aunt Polly, re-created as the leading character in ‘Odour of Chrysanthemums’. Passing by Moorgreen Reservoir, surrounded by hills and trees and retaining its charm, you will understand why Lawrence used this setting as a basis for Nethermere in the ‘White Peacock’ and Willey Water in ‘Women in Love’. Other places of interest on the tour include Greasley Church the setting for Minton Church in ‘Sons and Lovers’. Of medieval origin, with a 15th Century tower the church is set on a prominent tree covered site. At Eastwood Cemetery you will find the Lawrence family grave, the resting place of Lawrence’s mother, father and brother Ernest. Lawrence was cremated and his ashes eventually scattered in New Mexico. At the end of the tour your guide will say goodbye and bid you a safe journey home. .
