![]() Derbyshire's Peaks and Past ![]() Meet your guide in Baslow and your first stop will be for morning coffee on the way to the village of Eyam. When the Great Plague reached Eyam in 1665 the villagers, under the leadership of William Mompesson the rector, decided to stay in the village rather than leave and risk spreading the infection. Eventually five out of every six members of the village died. Your guide will explain in detail the trials and tribulations endured by the residents. From Eyam you will travel to Castleton for lunch through Stoney Middleton and Grindleford, past Padley Chapel, over the moors by Carls Wark, an Iron Age fortress to the village of Hathersage with its strong connections to Charlotte Bronte and Little John. Castleton is a fascinating place under the shadow of the 11th century Peveril Castle, the inspiration for Sir Walter Scott's novel 'Peveril of the Peak'. There will be time to take lunch and to see and purchase the unique 'Blue John' stone, which has been fashioned into ornaments and jewellery in these parts for 2,000 years. After lunch you travel south and your guide will explain the uniquely Derbyshire history of 'well dressing'. The journey from Castleton will take you through Bradwell and from there to Wardlow and spectacular views over Monsal Dale. A short ride through Ashford-in-the-Water will bring you back to Bakewell, famous for its puddings, where tea can be taken and the puddings sampled or you can just walk by the river and feed the ducks. On leaving Bakewell the coach will progress to Baslow where your guide will leave you.
