![]() Derbyshire Delights ![]() On this tour you will meet your qualified guide in the Derbyshire town of Ripley, and travel through 'Peak Practice' country. The villages of Crich and Fritchley played host to the series and you may see 'Beth Glover's' house and the centre of 'Cardale' as you pass though. From Crich you pass through Cromford, famous for Sir Richard Arkwright and his mills that revolutionised cotton production, under the cable cars in Matlock Bath, and on to Matlock for coffee. There are lots of general shops here and the opportunity to look around a very popular antiques emporium. Onward from Matlock you will travel through Chatsworth Park the seat of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, Hathersage with its historical connections with Robin Hood and the Bronte family, and Tideswell famous for its spectacular 'well dressing'. Lunch will be taken in Buxton, the capital of the High Peak. After lunch, or even the taking of the 'waters', you will travel over Monsal Head to Eyam. When the Great Plague reached Eyam in 1665 the villagers under the leadership of William Mompesson the rector, decided to stay in the village rather than leave and risk spreading the infection. Eventually five out of every six members of the village died. Your guide will explain in detail the trials and tribulations endured by the residents. From here you will travel to Bakewell for a short stop, though long enough to sample the puddings. Then it's back along the 'Via Gellia' road to Cromford and Ripley where your guide will leave and wish you a safe onward journey.
