![]() The Boston Pilgrims Tour ![]() Your qualified guide will meet you in Sleaford, a thriving Lincolnshire market town where you will take a short break for refreshment. After a brief tour of this ancient market town it's off to the small village of Heckington, home to one of England's finest churches built in the English Decorative style and also the home of the only eight-sailed working windmill in Western Europe. From here you are off to Boston with its famous 'Stump', the 272ft church tower in the centre of the town. This is the tallest parish church tower in England. The town gave its name to Boston Massachusetts when a band of Puritans sailed from the docks in 1640 to set up a new life in the 'New World'. Before leaving they were imprisoned in the Guildhall and the cells can still be seen. You will see also the houses with their 'flood steps', a reminder of the constant flooding in the Fens in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. After taking lunch you will travel to the Sibsey Trader windmill, a grade I listed building maintained by English Heritage and still grinding its own flour for sale to the public. From here you will wend your way through the Lincolnshire fenland via Coningsby, the home of the RAF's 'Battle of Britain' Flight. The final call is at Tattershall with its vast 15th century fortified and moated tower built for Ralph Cromwell Lord Treasurer of England from 1433 to 1443. After a short break for refreshment here it is back to Sleaford where you will say goodbye to your guide and head for home.
